Why Vietnam Should Be Your Next Destination

Vietnam is a country that captures the heart of every traveller who visits. From the emerald waters of Ha Long Bay to the bustling streets of Hanoi, from the ancient charm of Hoi An to the vibrant energy of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam offers an extraordinary diversity of experiences. The country has rapidly become one of Southeast Asia's most popular destinations, and for good reason. The food is world-class, the scenery is breathtaking, the people are warm and welcoming, and the value for money is exceptional. Whether you're a backpacker on a budget or a luxury traveller seeking five-star experiences, Vietnam delivers.

Visa Requirements and Entry

British passport holders can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days, making it incredibly convenient for UK travellers. For longer stays, an e-visa is available online for around USD 25 and allows a 30-day stay. The e-visa process is straightforward and typically takes 3 working days. If you're planning a multi-country trip and need multiple entries, a tourist visa from the Vietnamese embassy is your best option. Always ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity from your date of entry.

Best Time to Visit

Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometres from north to south, so the climate varies significantly by region. For the north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa), September to November offers pleasant autumn weather with clear skies. Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang) is best from February to May before the summer heat peaks. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) is ideal from December to April during the dry season. The good news is that some part of Vietnam is always in its optimal season, making it a genuine year-round destination.

Getting Around Vietnam

Vietnam has excellent domestic flight connections between major cities, with Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways operating frequent services. The Reunification Express train runs the length of the country from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and is a wonderful experience in itself. For shorter journeys, private cars with drivers are the most comfortable option and surprisingly affordable. In cities, Grab (Asia's equivalent of Uber) is reliable and inexpensive. For the adventurous, motorbike tours are an iconic way to experience the country, especially along the Hai Van Pass.

Vietnamese Street Food: A Beginner's Guide

Vietnamese cuisine is consistently ranked among the world's best, and the street food scene is legendary. Start with pho, the iconic noodle soup eaten for breakfast by millions of Vietnamese daily. Try banh mi, the French-influenced baguette sandwich that's become a global sensation. Sample bun cha in Hanoi, the grilled pork and noodle dish that Barack Obama famously enjoyed with Anthony Bourdain. In central Vietnam, don't miss cao lau in Hoi An or bun bo Hue. For the adventurous, egg coffee in Hanoi is a unique and delicious experience. Street food is not only delicious but incredibly affordable, with most dishes costing less than GBP 2.

Cultural Etiquette Tips

Vietnamese people are exceptionally friendly and forgiving of cultural missteps, but a few key tips will enhance your experience. Remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Dress modestly at religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. When visiting pagodas, walk around objects in a clockwise direction. Avoid touching anyone's head, as it's considered sacred. When accepting anything with both hands, it shows respect. A little bit of Vietnamese goes a long way: "xin chao" (hello) and "cam on" (thank you) will be met with broad smiles everywhere you go.
