Phuket: The All-Rounder
Thailand's largest island has earned its reputation as the country's premier beach destination. Phuket offers something for everyone: luxury resorts along Bang Tao Beach, lively nightlife on Patong, family-friendly Kata and Karon beaches, and tranquil hideaways on the island's west coast. Beyond the beaches, Phuket's Old Town offers charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, excellent food markets, and cultural attractions. Phuket is also the gateway to the stunning Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay, home to the famous James Bond Island.
Koh Samui: Tropical Luxury
If you're seeking a blend of tropical beauty and comfort, Koh Samui delivers. The island's coconut-palm-lined beaches, particularly Chaweng and Lamai, are stunning, while the interior reveals waterfalls, viewpoints, and a thriving wellness scene. Koh Samui has the best luxury resort offering of any Thai island, with properties like Four Seasons, Six Senses, and Banyan Tree. The island also serves as a base for day trips to the stunning Ang Thong National Marine Park and the neighbouring party island of Koh Phangan.
Koh Lanta: Laid-Back Paradise
For travellers seeking tranquillity and authenticity, Koh Lanta is the answer. This long, slender island in Krabi province has managed to retain a relaxed, uncommercialised atmosphere despite growing popularity. Long beaches backed by jungle, excellent local seafood restaurants, and a welcoming local community make Koh Lanta particularly popular with families and couples. The island's Old Town, on the east coast, is a charming collection of stilted wooden houses built by Chinese and Malay traders.
Koh Tao: Diver's Paradise
Tiny Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand has earned a worldwide reputation as one of the best and most affordable places to learn to dive. Crystal-clear waters, abundant marine life including whale sharks and turtles, and dozens of professional dive schools make this the ideal destination for underwater enthusiasts. Even non-divers will love the snorkelling, hiking trails to scenic viewpoints, and the island's youthful, energetic atmosphere. Accommodation ranges from basic beach bungalows to boutique resorts.
Which Island Season Is Best?
Thailand's islands are split between two coasts with different weather patterns. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Krabi) is best from November to April, with the west coast monsoon bringing rain from May to October. Many resorts and dive operators close during the low season. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) has a different pattern, with its rainy season running from October to December and the rest of the year generally dry and sunny. This means there's always a beautiful Thai island to visit, whatever the time of year.
